Laptop Warranty in South Africa: What Is Actually Covered?

Chris Riley29 March 2026

Types of Laptop Warranty in South Africa

Most new laptops sold in South Africa come with a manufacturer warranty, typically 12 months, covering hardware defects. Some retailers also offer their own retailer warranty or sell extended warranty plans at checkout. Understanding the difference matters when something goes wrong.

Manufacturer Warranty

Covers manufacturing defects and component failures under normal use. Business-focused ranges like Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad often include on-site or next-business-day support options, while consumer ranges are typically carry-in only.

Retailer Warranty

Some retailers extend additional cover or offer easier local claim processes than dealing directly with the manufacturer. Always ask what this adds beyond the standard manufacturer terms.

Extended Warranty

An optional paid add-on extending cover beyond the standard 12 months, sometimes up to 3 years. Worth considering for business-critical laptops, but read the exclusions carefully before paying extra.

What Is Usually Covered

  • Manufacturing defects in components (motherboard, RAM, screen backlight, keyboard)
  • Battery defects (though not normal capacity degradation over time)
  • Hinge and chassis defects under normal use

What Is Usually Excluded

  • Accidental damage — cracked screens, liquid spills, drops (unless you purchased accidental damage cover separately)
  • Power surge damage — a common exclusion relevant to South African buyers given loadshedding-related surges; consider surge protection or a UPS
  • Normal wear and tear — including gradual battery capacity loss
  • Unauthorised repairs — opening the laptop or having it serviced by a non-authorised repairer typically voids the warranty
  • Software issues — viruses, corrupted operating systems, and data loss are not hardware warranty matters

Your Consumer Protection Act Rights

Separately from manufacturer warranty, the South African Consumer Protection Act gives you an implied 6-month right to return faulty goods to the retailer you purchased from, regardless of the manufacturer's warranty terms, provided the fault existed at the time of purchase and wasn't caused by misuse.
