Laptop Battery Care: How to Extend Your Battery Life in South Africa

Chris Riley8 March 2026

Why Battery Care Matters More in South Africa

Loadshedding means South African laptop users rely on battery power more than users in most other countries. That extra cycling puts additional strain on your battery, making good charging habits even more important here than elsewhere.

The 20–80 Rule

Lithium-ion batteries, the type used in virtually all modern laptops, degrade fastest when kept at 100% charge or allowed to drain to 0%. Where possible, keep your battery between 20% and 80% charge for daily use. Many laptops (ThinkPad, HP, Dell business models) include a "battery health" or "conservation mode" setting in the BIOS that caps charging at 80% automatically.

Avoid Extreme Heat

Heat is the number one enemy of battery lifespan. Never leave your laptop in a closed car in South African summer conditions, and avoid using it on soft surfaces like a bed or your lap for extended periods, which block the cooling vents and raise internal temperature.

Loadshedding-Specific Advice

  • Charge to 100% only just before a scheduled loadshedding block if you know you'll need the runtime
  • Otherwise, stick to the 20–80% range during normal working days
  • Invest in a small UPS or power bank rated for laptops if loadshedding regularly interrupts your workday
  • Enable your OS power-saving mode during outages to stretch remaining battery further

Storage Tips (Long Trips or Unused Laptops)

If you won't use a laptop for more than two weeks, store it at around 50% charge in a cool, dry place. Storing at 100% or 0% for long periods accelerates permanent capacity loss.

When to Replace Your Battery

Most laptop batteries are rated for 500–1000 charge cycles, translating to roughly 2–4 years of typical use. If your battery health drops below 70–80% of original capacity, or your laptop won't hold more than an hour of charge, it's time for a replacement rather than a new laptop.
